Golden Milk is more than a beverage; it’s an experience. It’s the kind of drink you sip slowly, wrapped in a soft robe at sunrise, or curled up with a book as evening falls. It’s a moment of pause, a quiet luxury; an act of self-care that will have you shining from the inside.
Golden Milk is steeped in tradition. For thousands of years, it has been a staple of Ayurvedic wellness, prized for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. It’s an earthy, comforting, ritualistic beverage with a yellow complexion, and slow-building warmth.
The version of Golden Milk I’ve created, love, make in my own kitchen, and share with you now is different than the average Golden Milk recipe. It’s fresh, rich, vibrant, and indulgent while staying true to its roots (pun intended) as a healthful wellness beverage.
A Fresh Take on Golden Milk
- Add ginger: I use ginger in addition to turmeric for an enhanced synergistic effect.
- Ditch the powder and use fresh root: Golden Milk recipes often call for using dried spices. I like to use fresh root; it has more depth of flavor and bioactive compounds.
- The milk matters: I use cashew milk for its rich flavor and viscosity, as well as its appeal as a plant-based dairy alternative. However, please feel free to use your preferred milk.
- Sweeten wisely: Traditional recipes usually call for honey, sugar, or jaggery as a sweetener. In this Golden Milk recipe, I use ground dates. They add a delicious, unrefined, caramelized sweetness while adding fiber to the equation, helping to promote steady blood sugar levels.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does this recipe call for black pepper?
A substance in black pepper called piperine may help increase your body’s ability to absorb turmeric’s beneficial compounds such as curcumin.
Where can I find fresh ginger and turmeric roots?
Where I live in Virginia, fresh roots are readily available at several local grocery stores. If your local grocer does not carry fresh roots, I recommend trying your local natural food store. Online sources include Amazon, Thrive Market, MiamiFruit, and Melissas Produce. I’ve even heard of people finding good sources on Etsy.
